This is the second time we have purchased coffee from Orlando, our relationship is facilitated by the LaREB collective.

COLOMBIA

Orlando Sánchez

This is the second time we have worked with Orlando Sánchez, on his farm just outside Palestina, a major centre for coffee growing in the southern Huila region. We have previously worked with the Sánchez family, having purchased coffee from Orlando’s brother Rigoberto and most recently his sister Durley, through our work with the LaREB collective. Now all of the siblings are working with LaREB, on some of the oldest coffee growing lands in Palestina. The father of the current generation of the Sánchez family is originally from the Cundinamarca region just north of Colombian capital Bogotá, but moved to Caicedonia after getting married. Caicedonia is a small town not far from the ‘Coffee Triangle’ cities of Armenia, Pereira and Manizales, one we are familiar with after several visits to the Cafe Granja La Esperanza quality lab in the town centre, and to their nearby farms at Potosí and Las Margaritas.

All four of Orlando’s siblings work with the collective, including his brother Rigoberto and sister Durley who we have worked with in the past.

Huila

Palestina

Mid-century Colombia wasn’t an easy place to earn a stable living, and Orlando’s father was displaced from Caicedonia by violence in the mid 1940’s. This was not an uncommon occurrence at the time, and each farmer knew they had to take with them some sort of method of creating a new livelihood. Of course in this case Orlando’s father brought coffee seeds, a particularly old strain of Typica, and planted them in land not far from Palestina when he settled here in 1949. Since then, the family has become rather successful in coffee, especially Orlando. In fact, there was such respect for him within the community that he was pushed to run for mayor of Palestina, serving two terms in 1995 and 2000. He has his own farm now, leaving the original Sanchez lands from 1949 to his sisters Durley and Marisela, and brother Rigoberto. The Sánchez family are still very respected both in the community of Palestina, and in the wider speciality coffee movement in Huila, that has gained great momentum over the past decade or so. Due to this, they are very sought after coffee growers, but choose to work with LaREB as their goals align; a genuine and passionate drive to preserve coffee growing communities across Colombia, and help them to prosper.

Orlando’s washed process unveils an excellent example of the traditional Colombian profile, with a fresh and aromatic cup lifted by a crisp acidity.

Fruity & Acidic

Tabi

This lot is from Orlando’s stock of the Tabi varietal, growing alongside exotic varietals such as Pink Bourbon and Geisha. While coffee is not Orlando’s primary income, he is a truly driven producer of high end coffees, and is not shy of the fact that he aims to be one of the best in the region. The Sánchez family, particularly Orlando, have long been a driving force in speciality coffee in Huila, always with a view to ‘lead from the fields’, they continually push for modern coffee growing techniques that add value, while keeping in mind the reality of many farmers’ situation. The Tabi varietal is known to give a very fresh and crisp cup profile, but is also resistant to many diseases and fungi we see in Colombia. The washed process used here is rather straightforward and traditional, and serves only to unveil the characteristics of the varietal and Orlando’s excellent work in the field. Here we find complex and fresh aromatics of herbs and ripe berries, with a clear and crisp acidity from the Tabi varietal balanced by a deep ripe fruit sweetness.

Washed Process

The washed process involves completely removing both the cherry and the mucilage from the outside of the parchment with the use of friction, fermentation and water. After being harvested, the coffee cherry is then sliced open by either a metal or a sharp plastic blade.

The two seeds (also known as beans) are pushed out of the cherry, which leaves the seed with mucilage as their outermost layer. It is essential in the washed process that all mucilage is removed from the seed which leaves only the flavour that developed in the cell structure of the seed prior to processing.
