The Cooperative

The Hunda Oli cooperative’s 181 members are part of the Kata Mudaga Union, which was established in August 2016 and includes more than 17.000 small-scale farmers. Kata Mudaga Union is located near the town of Agaro, within the regional state of Oromia, in Jimma zone, about 400 km southwest of Addis Ababa.

Just as in other coffee producing countries in Africa, Ethiopia has strict rules regulating authority along the supply chain. Unions have several functions and work as service-providers to coops with regards to financing, agronomic assistance, mandatory documentation, and marketing to exporters. The nature of working relations between coops and unions are therefore of vital importance in ensuring that farmers are provided with adequate support to grow and bring to market consistently high-quality coffees, and in ensuring that exporters and roasters are made aware of the best available qualities.

Goma, Jimma, Ethiopia

The cooperative’s total working area encompasses five rural districts in the Jimma Zone: Goma, Gera, Gummay, Setema and Sigimo. Coffee is grown around 2.000 masl, at temperatures ranging between 12-24 degrees C (averaging 20 degrees C), with annual rainfall averaging just under 1.800 mm. The coffee harvest in Ethiopia falls between November and February, a few months after the period of heaviest precipitation during summer months.
