This month

This month we’re welcoming our final releases of the Central American season, from El Salvador. We travelled across El Salvador in March 2023, catching up with many  producers we have worked with for several years. El Salvador is a rather small country in terms of area, but full of contrasts.

Each of this month’s lots reflect the part of El Salvador from which they originate.

Kilimanjaro

In the west, Aida Batlle’s Finca Kilimanjaro was planted many years ago, by one of the several families that brought coffee to El Salvador in the late 19th Century. The trees here are some of the oldest examples of SL-28 outside of Kenya, thought to pre-date the final selection of the varietal by Scott Laboratories. This leads to a red berry driven cup, showcasing the varietal’s character.

Los Pirineos

In the east, Diego Baraona’s Los Pirineos has also been in the family for many years, but grows a very different set of varietals, including modern Salvadoran coffee’s calling card, Pacamara. The floral notes of the Pacamara shine in this month’s washed lot, backed up by orange and rich brown sugar in the cup.

Last month’s coffees

Last month we were excited to share coffees from Juan Peña’s project CafExporto, now for the third time. Juan’s background as a rose farmer and agricultural engineer has shaped his meticulous and exacting approach to coffee.

The first coffee was from CafExporto’s Chito community project, the work of several small farmers surrounding the town of Chito. Their washed Typica delivered clean and floral aromatics followed by green tea and citrus in the cup.

The second coffee was an Anaerobic lot from Juan’s own farm, enhancing the mouthfeel and acidity of the Typica varietal, while maintaining an incredibly clean and juicy expression.
